Strategic HR Planning

The value of planning is well-recognised and strategic plans, business plans, succession plans and marketing plans are every day talking points.  An, when leaders believe that employees are their most valuable assets for their company’s success, strategic HR planning is a must!

More often than not human resources activities in a business end up chasing their tail and undertaking important but day to day activities that need to get done.   What really needs to happen however is that HR activities need to align with the business plan – which to be honest is usually missing and therefore making it difficult for HR to know what the business is aiming for, trying to achieve and therefore making it harder to contribute strategically.   HR Strategic Planning is a process to identify current and future needs for an organisation to achieve its goals.  It links between the organisations strategic plan and human resources.   And, now is the time for it to be reviewed with businesses going through so many changes with many impacts from different fronts.

However, if this is the case and the business is simply trying to increase profits which is generally where the focus is, then without guidance from a business plan, focus from a HR perspective needs to be on how to maximise performance and productivity of employees.   This may mean different things for each business as the business, the leaders and the people are different.  It is however very important to undertake an analysis of where the business is and where it wants to go as is analysing cultural and environmental factors, weaknesses and issues and then understanding why weaknesses and issues exist.

There are different approaches to developing HR strategies however, we believe strategies starts with the linking of the requirements and changes of following to the business goals; organisational culture, leadership, workforce planning and the organisational structure, industrial relations and workplace health and safety compliance, focus and culture and the rest then flows and follows to all areas of HR.   Its these issues that really impact performance and productivity and the plan ensures strategic alignment to the business.   At HR Business Direction, we are passionate about helping our clients get a ROI from their people and creating working work environments (which goes hand in hand) that support and prevent mental health.  This allows us to make a true difference in society – for businesses and individuals.   Don’t forget, RUOK?
