The Dreaded “R” Word
The Dreaded R word
The dreaded R word! Yep, Redundancy. There I said it!
Redundancies particularly at this time is dreaded, by not only individuals but for businesses having to undertake them and the business representative having to consult and deliver the message.
Redundancies is something I have no doubt at this point in time all parties would like to avoid and I have no doubt with measures that have been available to date with temporary updates to legislation, reduced pays, job keeper, different business offerings it most likely has been avoided and many businesses are probably still avoiding it. However, there is a lot of businesses that can’t anymore.
So, what can be done to ease the pain for all parties? We’ve got some tips that may help.
- Be prepared & seek advice
- Check industrial instruments to follow a compliant process
- Have a support person for both parties
- Listen to concerns
- Remember the role is being made redundant not the person
- Take the time to genuinely consult, not just to tick the box
- Show empathy and respect during this difficult time
- Offer support such as financial, outplacement services or Employee Assistance that may help
- Manage remaining staff
- Be aware of the emotional impact on the person relaying the message
