“R U OK?” Day: 1 out of 365 isn’t enough

We shouldn’t need “R U OK” day. There, I said it. Don’t get me wrong, “R U OK?” day is a fantastic initiative that raises awareness about mental health and wellbeing (I’m a huge fan), but we shouldn’t need “R U OK?” day. To me, having a special day to highlight the promotion of mental health and wellbeing is a sad reminder that we are failing for the other 364 days of the year – we simply don’t do enough.

So, what should we do? The answer is simple, don’t wait for “R U OK?” day, start the conversation todayAsk, Listen, Encourage, and Follow-up.

Some of the biggest things that stop people from asking “R U OK?” are fears, fears about “intruding” or not knowing what to do. If you notice that someone seems stressed, or isn’t acting like themselves, chances are that they may need a bit of extra support. Don’t ignore the signs – take some time to start a conversation.

You don’t need to be a mental health expert, know all of the answers, or be able to “fix” things. Listening in a non-judgmental way, and offering support is all it takes to start the conversation.

If you ask “R U OK?” and the person you ask is doing fine they will most likely be thankful for your concern. If you ask “R U OK?” and the person you ask needs support your question could be the thing that changes their life.

At work, mental health and wellbeing needs to be on the agenda every day. We need to build workplace cultures where people are comfortable to ask, andanswer the most important question every day. We can only achieve this by doing it, every day – the time for action is now.
